Fay's Twin Cinema opened on December 26th, 1982, and has been serving Taree & district as it's movie venue with the Howard family as owner/managers ever since.
The cinema is named after Mrs Fay Howard, late wife of cinema owner Don Howard. Fay had died suddenly earlier in 1982, and Fay's Twin was built in tribute to their shared vision of a brand new cinema complex for Taree.
The first film, opening Boxing Day, was ET:The Extra Terrestrial, and from Day 1 the cinema has proven to be a great success thanks to the amazing support shown by the people of the region.
Don continued to run the day to day operations of the cinemas until the early 1990's, while son Peter learnt more and more about the cinema business until he was ready to take the reins. Don still has some involvement with the cinemas in a technical capacity, however Peter and his wife Danielle (along with a fabulous staff, many of whom have been there for more than 10 years) now look after daily cinema operations, accountancy, advertising, and programming.
The most successful film over the life of Fay's Twin Cinema to this point has been Titanic (1998), and perhaps suprisingly followed by some Australian-made comedies, led by Crocodile Dundee (1986), Strictly Ballroom (1992), Muriel's Wedding (1994), The Castle (1997), and Crackerjack (2002). Other very successful and long running films at Fay's have included the Lord of the Rings trilogy, the Star Wars films, ET: The Extra Terrestrial, the Shrek trilogy, and The Lion King.

Fay's Twin Cinema comprises two auditoriums with a central foyer. There is a central box office, with a large and well stocked candy bar with all the usual cinema favourites such as choc tops (multiple flavours), popcorn, soft drinks and the omnipresent maltesers.
The cinemas currently seat 304 (cinema 1) and 176 (cinema 2). Prior to an internal refurbishment in 2006, the cinemas did seat a larger audience.
Both auditoriums feature full Dolby Digital multichannel sound, and films are presented via state of the art projection systems including digital projection for certain features. All preshow cinema advertising is presented via our Panasonic digital projectors.
Comfortable access for the disabled has always been a priority at Fay's Twin, and in fact it was one of the very first buildings constructed in Taree designed from the ground up to have full wheelchair access throughout the complex. This was years before it became a mandatory design requirement.
Fay's Twin Cinema offers electronic assistance to people with hearing diffculties, and who have hearing aids. Embedded under the carpet in a section of both cinemas is an inductive loop which allows those with hearing aids to tune into that loop, and reproduce the film's soundtrack through their hearing aid, which significantly enhances the movie going experience for those partons.
Fay's Twin Cinema's auditoriums were largely refurbished in 2005 with new carpeting and seating. All seats now have generously sized cupholders and the very back row of each cinema has fold up armrests for those that... well.... want to have a snuggle with that special someone.
We have many future plans for Fay's Twin Cinema and hope to be able to reveal them on the site in the future.
